How to Track Brand Mentions in ChatGPT, Perplexity & Gemini
ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini are the three most important AI search surfaces for brands today. Each works differently, so tracking brand mentions across them requires a slightly different approach. This guide gives you the exact prompts and methods to use.

How Each AI Search Engine Handles Brand Mentions
- ChatGPT: Generates answers from training data or web browsing. Mentions may not cite sources unless browsing is enabled.
- Perplexity: Always provides citations. You can see which web pages support the mention.
- Gemini: Integrated with Google Search and AI Overviews. Citations come from Google's index.
Step 1: Create a Query List
Use three categories of prompts:
- Brand: "What does [your brand] do?"
- Category: "What are the best tools for [use case]?"
- Comparison: "[Your brand] vs [competitor]: which is better?"
Write 10-15 prompts total. Keep them consistent across platforms so you can compare results.
Step 2: Run Prompts in ChatGPT
Test both with and without web browsing. Record:
- Whether your brand is mentioned.
- How it is described.
- Whether competitors are mentioned instead.
ChatGPT often hallucinates or relies on outdated training data, so verify any factual claims.
Step 3: Check Perplexity Sources
Perplexity is the most transparent platform because it always cites sources. For each prompt, note:
- The cited URLs.
- Whether your site or a trusted directory is cited.
- Which competitor pages appear.
If Perplexity cites a competitor but not you, that is a clear link-building and content gap.
Step 4: Review Gemini AI Overviews
Search Google with your category queries. Look for AI Overviews that list tools or recommend solutions. These overviews are powered by Gemini and are increasingly visible to searchers.
If your brand is missing, focus on improving your Google Search visibility and structured data, because Gemini draws heavily from Google's index.
Step 5: Compile and Compare
Record results in a spreadsheet. Compare:
- Which platform mentions you most often.
- Which platform describes you most accurately.
- Which platform favors competitors.
Use these insights to prioritize content and outreach. If Gemini ignores you but Perplexity cites you, you may need stronger Google SEO. If ChatGPT ignores you, you may need more training-data presence.
